The United States Department of Homeland Security is responsible for patrolling and securing the borders of the United States. They also patrol and secure airports, waterways, and seaports, to ensure and maintain the protection and safety of the country. The United States Department of Homeland Security was first established in September of 2001. It is the newest department in the United States military.

People who have military careers usually work for the Department of Homeland Security specialize in the field of security, protection, and support. They work on providing advancements in technology and science for the purpose of creating recovery systems. Some examples of this are cyber security, the creation of detection programs, and nuclear detection. There are many military law enforcement specialists in the Department of Homeland Security. A lot of people who start off in military jobs have the opportunity to advance in the Homeland Security sector.

Some examples of these military career positions are Immigration enforcement, law enforcement, secret service, and customs and border protection. Immigration careers are also a big part of the department of homeland security. There is a separate sector, Immigration and Travel Security that employs individuals to oversee the entrance points along the US border. The officers check immigrant visa petitions, refugee and asylum applications, and naturalization petitions. Immigration and Travel Security is also responsible for TSA, which is the Transportation Security Administration.



Military Careers in Prevention and Response
The purpose of a military job in Prevention and Response is to prevent attacks on the country and respond to emergency situations. Examples of positions in Prevention and Response would be with the United States Coast Guard, and with FEMA. Fema stands for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Civil Rights and Liberties Officers
Civil Rights and Liberties Officers are responsible for investigating and resolving issues and complaints. They also provide training, support, and program and policy advice.
