What is a Security Analyst?

Security Analysts identify vulnerabilities in security policies and recommend improvements. For example, if a private company in the US wants to invest in the economy of a foreign country, this would mean hiring workers, building facilities, and complying with legal requirements.

If the country has a high crime rate or a questionable legal system, this investment can be risky. The analyst will analyze all of these factors and prepare reports for the investors and management of the company. In a public company, the military career as an analyst will most likely work for a law enforcement agency, defense or intelligence.

The US Military, CIA, and FBI all have analysts within their ranks who are responsible for identifying risks and preparing reports. Now that information technology is such a large part of most operations, it is vital to have a solid security policy to prevent someone from breaking into the network. According to www.defensetalk.com, countries such as Russia and China have hackers prepared to attack the networks of their enemies. The website of Wired Magazine reported that Russian hackers played a part in the war against Georgia in 2008. The website, www.indeed.com, reports that the annual salary of an intelligence or military analyst is approximately $76k a year.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a military computer systems analyst makes about $34.46 per hour; rates may vary when you have a military job. For the most part, an analyst will be required to have a bachelor's degree, and in some cases, a graduate degree. A physical security analyst will most likely have a background in international relations or political science, while an Information Security Analyst will probably have a background in computer science. Public sectors will usually take on graduates without experience and train them at an entry level, while a private company prefers to hire more experienced candidates.
