A pilot by simple definition is a person who has received training in aviation and has the knowledge to propel the engine of an aircraft. A fighter pilot on the other hand is one who not only has the aviation knowledge but in addition, he is trained under the military and normally controls aircrafts of war. Actually, a fighter pilot is engaged in military aviation which basically means using fighter aircrafts. A fighter pilot usually has skills to control an aircraft and still use it to fight an enemy.

It is worth mentioning at this point that becoming a fighter pilot is not a one day occasion but instead is a process. It involves a lot of training and it is only with great determination and hard work, patience and dedication that one can make it big in this career field. Some of the training involved is tiring and exhausting and often trainees in this career field drop out while halfway through the course. Perseverance is thus of the utmost importance to be able to succeed in this field.

General Requirements

One feature that is common with fighter pilots is that they must be in exceptionally good health. This is because the kinds of activities they engage in require a lot of physical well being. In particular, the heart must be free from all defects for one to qualify for a position in this field. Thus anyone with heart problems can not qualify in this career field. In addition, the muscle tissues especially those of the abdomen must be strong. It is important to point out that contrary to the common perception that relates fighter pilots with flying, although one must have the knowledge of propelling an aircraft this job has nothing much to do with piloting but more so with fighting the enemy. Perhaps the only relation between flying and this particular career is that the aircrafts are the means through which an enemy is countered.

Other Requirements

To begin with, one must be a member of the military where one gets trained as a military member in order to gain the various skills required in this field. Secondly, one must be an officer who has been commissioned as such by the relevant bodies or authorities.

The major role that fighter pilots play is to protect the country against enemies by ensuring that the country is well armed against any enemy attacks.

As already mentioned, for anyone to be able to secure a position in the fighter pilot career field, one must be a member of the army. The most preferable category for this career is the Navy. In addition one must be an officer commissioned as such and thus have the relevant authority.

Working Conditions

The working conditions of a fighter pilot vary greatly, depending on events happening in the country and even in the outside world. Their work becomes involved only when there is war and tension or any anticipation of attacks from an enemy country. It is important to note that although this job is done by professionals, it can be life threatening at times. However, in line with their training even when there is peace, they are required to carry out fulltime patrols in the air just to ensure that the security of the country is tight and beefed up.

Besides the physical tests that have been discussed earlier that one must pass, in addition one should be able to work under pressure and must be able to withstand and handle stressful situations professionally. High standards must be maintained with the professional code of ethics being maintained at all times. One must also be able to be flexible enough so as to respond to emergencies at short notice.

Training

As far as educational and academic qualifications are concerned, one must be a graduate from college or any other institution of learning. Proficiency in science subjects and mathematics works for the benefit of a candidate seeking a position in this career field. In addition aviation knowledge is mandatory. While in the military, some of the training that the pilot fighters go through includes defensive and offensive tactics. Some of the procedures that one must go through to be enrolled in the training of officers include filling a form that contains all your details both personal and otherwise. Having successfully completed training as an officer, it is at this stage that one is sent to a flight school where one familiarizes himself or herself with the aviation field.

In the world today, although it is still not easy to become a fighter pilot, the procedure of securing a position in this career field has been simplified greatly. This is through Officer Candidate School. Normally once a person has graduated from college or any other institution of higher learning one can become an officer after undergoing a four months training. After this he is then required to enroll for training as a pilot. According to the laws that govern the training of fighter pilots, one must begin training as a pilot before attaining the age of twenty seven. This serves as a means of limiting the number of people who pursue careers in this field. The main reason is that fighter pilots handle a very sensitive job and thus it is required that they be limited in number but fully trained.

Job Prospects

Competition is one element that characterizes this career field. For that reason it is important that one ensures that they have the right qualifications for this job. This field has been experiencing considerable growth over the years and this trend is expected to continue. The fun bit of this particular job is that one gets to travel a lot and experience different environments, although it is good to remember the risk associated with it

Conclusion

Fighter pilot jobs are not easy to get and especially to qualify in. However, this does not mean that it is not possible, and with determination the sky will be the only limit.
